In a significant move, the region where the Magoodhoo Airport is under development, situated in the northern part of the Nilandhe Atoll, has been officially separated from the jurisdiction of the local island council. It has now been declared as a distinct industrial village, paving the way for a major transformation.

This jurisdictional change was instated through a resolution by the President's Office, in alignment with the Decentralization of Administrative Areas Act, and was subsequently published in the Government of Maldives Gazette.

The massive undertaking of creating the airport is in full swing, with extensive dredging work covering an area of 30 hectares in Magoodhoo. The responsibility for this ambitious endeavor has been entrusted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which secured the dredging contract at a value of MVR 206 million. It is important to note that a total of 48 hectares will be dredged in Magoodhoo, encompassing 30.8 hectares for the airport and an additional 17 hectares designated for industrial and social purposes.

The airport development project is a crucial step towards safeguarding over 3300 acres of the region. The government has affirmed that once the dredging work is completed, the development of the airport will be handed over to a suitable entity. Initially conceived as a 1,200-meter runway, the project has now expanded to include an 1,800-meter runway, promising better connectivity and accessibility to this part of the Maldives.

Magoodhoo Airport will not only serve as a key transportation hub but also house a fuel farm, a vital component for refueling aircraft, enhancing the capabilities and potential of this unique aviation development in one of the few provinces in the Maldives without an airport. As work continues to progress, the future of the Magoodhoo Airport development holds great promise for both the region and the nation.
