In a groundbreaking move for the Maldives, SpaceX's Starlink has officially launched its high-speed internet services in the island nation, offering residents speeds of up to 200 Mbps. The service, priced at MVR 1,000 per month, aims to revolutionize connectivity in the Maldives.
Individuals who pre-ordered the Starlink hardware received confirmation emails, signaling the imminent arrival of their packages. The comprehensive package, priced at MVR 10,300, includes a Starlink dish antenna, mount, and a Wi-Fi router unit. Shipping is expected within two weeks from the date of order confirmation.
Technology Minister Aishath Shauna expressed enthusiasm about the arrival of Starlink in the Maldives, stating, "I wish to thank everyone involved in getting us here — Starlink provides a unique solution for our island nation. We hope to benefit more from satellite technology, especially for our climate adaptation needs." The Ministry had granted Starlink a license in August, marking the Maldives as the first South Asian country to issue such authorization to the innovative satellite internet provider.
SpaceX, through Starlink, has been extending high-speed internet services via satellite to numerous countries worldwide. With its license from the Maldivian government secured, Starlink is set to play a pivotal role in transforming the digital landscape of the archipelago.
Starlink's internet services are currently available in more than 50 countries, spanning Europe, North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand. Offering speeds ranging from 50 to 150 megabits per second, Starlink has continually pushed the boundaries of internet accessibility. Last year, the company achieved a milestone with speeds reaching up to 300 megabits per second.
As the Maldives embraces Starlink's cutting-edge technology, the nation anticipates a significant leap in internet connectivity, ushering in a new era of digital possibilities for residents and businesses alike.
