In a recent update on the Thilamale' Bridge project, Dr. Mohammed Muizzu, President-elect of the Maldivian government, revealed that the completion of the project is facing uncertainties due to unanticipated issues. The ambitious bridge project, financed by India's Fcons at a cost of $500 million (MVR 7.7 billion), has encountered delays that have raised questions about its timeline.
Speaking about the project, Mohammed Muizzu stated, "The bridge will be completed as soon as possible." He emphasized the government's commitment to the project and assured that they would closely examine the issues causing delays.
Muizzu had previously communicated to Mihaaru that he lacked detailed information about the project's status, making it challenging to provide an accurate completion date. He mentioned that the work had encountered difficulties due to unspecified problems, and a comprehensive investigation was required.
Addressing the project's future, Muizzu explained, "We will look at what happened in detail and make an exact timeline. We will also have to sit down with the contractor." The initial estimate for completing the six-kilometer bridge is three to four years, assuming smooth progress.
Muizzu expressed his apprehension about the current status of the project, stating, "Upon examining the portion that has been completed so far, it becomes evident that progress is not as expected, particularly in the underwater sections. In the photographs, we can observe some challenges in the underwater infrastructure, such as pipes and steel components. It may be necessary to conduct a thorough assessment and consider the possibility of replacing these elements with new support pillars."
The Thilamale' Bridge project, funded by India's Fcons, involves a substantial investment of $500 million (MVR 7.7 billion). A significant portion of this amount, $400 million, is provided through a line of credit from the Exim Bank of India, with an additional $100 million contributed as free aid by the Government of India.
The government had previously secured an extra $100 million line of credit earlier in the year to expedite the progress of the bridge. Despite ongoing challenges, the government has reiterated its commitment to the project's completion.
The Thilamale' Bridge project has seen multiple projected completion dates. Dr. Muizzu's comments reflect ongoing concerns and criticisms surrounding the progress of the project. He has consistently affirmed that the project would be completed during his administration.
As uncertainties loom over the Thilamale Bridge project's timeline, the government and its stakeholders continue to address the challenges and strive for the completion of this significant infrastructure undertaking. The project's ultimate success remains a matter of keen interest for both the Maldivian and Indian governments, as well as the public.
